A new scammer is attempting to solicit North Dakota citizens for money.

The scammer is claiming to be Cass County Sheriff Paul Laney, claiming North Dakotans with outstanding warrants can have them dismissed if money is sent. Reports have been most frequent in the Fargo area, but the fraudulent caller could attempt to try other North Dakota areas.

Callbacks to the number are being sent to a voicemail that also makes false claims of portraying Laney, as reported by KFGO. The sheriff's office has stated that it's not Laney.

Authorities are asking for anyone that's receiving such calls to contact the Red River Regional Dispatch Center at 701-451-7660.
