While Bismarck and Mandan students prepare to go back to school, some parents are campaigning for a change in the start date.

For the Bismarck public schools, Light of Christ Catholic schools and Theodore Jamerson Elementary School at United Tribes Technical College, the first day of school will be Tuesday.  Mandan public schools, Christ the King School, St. Joseph Catholic School and Shiloh Christian School will start Thursday.

Meanwhile,a group of parents is pushing to have the start of the school year pushed back to after Labor Day, a period when the weather is generally not as hot.

The parents' group plans to gather signatures for a November 2014 ballot measure requiring North Dakota schools to start after Labor Day.
