A museum in Fargo dedicated to the former Major League Baseball Right Fielder Roger Maris was broken into on early Tuesday morning.

KFGO radio reports that someone broke a door on the southeast side of the West Acres Mall where the museum is located, and then smashed a display case at the Roger Maris Museum.

The break-in occurred around 2am on Tuesday (7/26) morning. It was not immediately known if any items were stolen but the incident was caught on surveillance cameras.

The Roger Maris Museum opened in 1984.

Maris was born in Minnesota but grew up in North Dakota attending high school at Fargo Central. Maris hit 61 home runs in 1961 as a member of the New York Yankees. That was the single-season home run record until it was broken in 1998 first by Mark McGwire and then again by Sammy Sosa the same year.

UPDATE 1:16PM: The Associated Press reports that a prize belt awarded to top athletes was stolen from the museum. The value of the belt is between $90,000 and $140,000.
