FCS Preview: San Diego Expects ‘David vs Goliath’ Matchup Against NDSU

North Dakota State comes into Saturday's FCS Playoffs as heavy favorites against San Diego. But just how heavy?

The San Diego Union-Tribune describes the feeling of waiting for Saturday's contest "like waiting for the “Miracle on Ice” puck to drop."

San Diego running back Jonah Hodges even went as far as saying, "it probably would be the biggest upset in all of sports history," should San Diego beat the mighty Bison.

While those are strong words, keep in mind NDSU are the 5-time defending FCS national champions. One of their wins this season was knocking off a strong Iowa team. That same Iowa team also gave Michigan one of their two losses. Michigan happens to be a strong contender for the College Football Playoffs (even stronger until Ohio St. beat them last Saturday).

The fact of the matter is that each player on North Dakota State's offensive line stands, on average, 2 1/2 inches taller, and 15 pounds heavier than that of the players on San Diego's offensive line. NDSU's defense is also allowing 105 yards rushing per game, and has only allowed a total of eight rushing touchdowns all season. That's a pretty stellar statistic for any team to overcome.

That being said, San Diego beat Cal Poly last week, 35-21. That comes after being beat down in Week 2 to that same Cal Poly team, 38-16. That's a 36-point turnaround. Maybe this isn't quite the 'David vs. Goliath' matchup as it seems, at least on paper anyway.
