Firefighters Battling Second Fire on Standing Rock Reservation

The Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota has had a harrowing weekend, suffering not one, but two, wildfires.

The town of Cannonball was evacuated Sunday (Oct. 11) while firefighters contended with the nearby conflagration that threatened their safety. That fire is "mostly out," according to KX News, but now emergency response has moved to a wooded area near the town of Wakpala.

As of 2:45 p.m. today (Oct. 12), the fire was burning out of control about six miles outside of Wakpala. Despite the wild nature of the flames, no evacuation had been initiated, and no one was determined to be in danger.

The town water treatment plant has made a shelter available in the event that an evacuation is necessary.
