Former NDSU and Minnesota State, Mankato, linebacker Isaac Kolstad is in critical condition after sustaining permanent brain damage during an alleged assault in Mankato over the weekend.

According to KTSP in Minneapolis, former University of Minnesota and current Rutgers quarterback Phillip Nelson was arrested in connection with the alleged assault:

Minnesota State, Mankato, football player and Mankato East graduate Isaac Kolstad was in critical condition Sunday night at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato. Police say Kolstad was found near the intersection of Cherry and South Front Streets around 2 a.m.

Police say Nelson was located on scene and taken into custody shortly after for probable cause assault. Another person is being sought by police.

Isaac Kolstad's family has released the following statement:

We are extremely grateful for the outpouring of support we have received during this difficult time.  Isaac is a very strong and determined young man, who is dearly loved by his family and friends. We would respectfully ask for your continued prayers.

We would also ask members of the news media and others to respect our request and need for privacy at this time.  We have requested that no further information (beyond his medical condition) be released.  Thank you for your understanding and continued thoughts and prayers for Isaac, his wife and children, and all others who are involved in this situation.
