Adrian Cronauer, the radio host whose stint in Armed Forces Radio inspired the Robin Williams hit movie Good Morning VietNam, has died. The Roanoke (Virginia) Times reports Mr, Cronauer died Wednesday at a nursing home in Troutville, Virginia. He was 79.

Born in Pittsburgh, Mr. Cronauer served in the U.S. Air Force and worked as a disc jockey in Armed Forces Radio in VietNam during the mid-sixties.

Friends say the phrase, "Gooooooood Morning, VietNaaaaaaam" became his signature opening when he hosted the morning shift in Saigon

The 1987 movie Good Morning, VietNam, based (very) loosely on Mr. Cronauer's radio career, became a box office hit, earning star Robin Williams an Oscar nomination and helping revive the comedian's sagging film career.

After the military, Mr. Cronauer eventually settled in Roanoke, Virginia, where he worked at a local radio station while studying law, eventually serving as a Pentagon advisor.

He served as a confidential adviser to the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense from 2001 through 2009, and was also involved in many veterans' organizations.
