24/7 Wall St. published a list of the most dangerous states in the country. Several things to keep in mind, the states with the least metro areas and population, will obviously be in the lower category for violent crime or safer states. With that said, North Dakota ranked below some neighboring states with metros and more population. (Minnesota)

24/7 Wall St. classifies violent crime as rape, robbery, homicide and aggravated assault. 2016 proved to be another violent year with an increase in crime for the second year in a row. Violent crimes across the country rose 40% from 1984 to 1991. The website studied the FBI Uniform Crime Report from 2016 to determine the safest and most dangerous states in the country.

The findings were as follows, the safest states are Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Virginia and Connecticut. The most dangerous states are

  1. Alaska
  2. New Mexico
  3. Nevada
  4. Tennessee
  5. Louisiana

North Dakota ranked # 38 with 251 violent crimes, per 100,000, and 15 murders in the state (2nd fewest in the US) and the most dangerous metro in N.D. is Bismarck.
