One of the most exciting meteor showers of the year is expected to peak this weekend, and the North Dakota skies should be primed for excellent viewing.

The 2014 Geminid Meteor Shower runs from December 7-17, but the peak is expected in the overnight hours of Saturday, December 13 into Sunday, December 14. NASA predicts anywhere between 100-120 meteors per hour in areas with optimal viewing conditions. NASA considers those conditions as "dark, clear skies away from city lights". In other words, with our expected mild forecast and expansive landscape, perfect for North Dakota.

NASA considers this meteor shower to be "one of the best and most reliable" of the year.

The best time to begin looking for meteors is around 9-10pm. Even if you're not able to get outside to watch, the folks over at Slooh Community Observatory will be broadcasting the event starting at 7pm (CST).
