Law Enforcement in Burleigh County Mistake Brown Sugar for Heroin

A 28 year old woman accused of possession of heroin with intent to deliver had charges against her dropped after testing revealed the substance in question was actually brown sugar.

According to the Bismarck Tribune, officers saw the woman throw a syringe and saw a digital scale in the woman's bra.

While the woman was being booked, she removed a small bag from her private area and attempted to ingest the substance inside the bag.

The officers believed that the substance was black tar heroin but the woman claimed it was just brown sugar.

Charges were brought against the woman on July 23 and after further testing of the substance in the bag, it turned out that it was indeed just brown sugar. Charges were dropped the next day.

Why she kept a bag of brown sugar in her pants was not revealed.

The incident is similar to a story that made national headlines just last week when police in Florida mistook glaze from a Krispy Kreme doughnut as meth. In that case though, a field test that police have with them to test substances, tested the substance in question twice on the side of the road before bringing it to a lab.

The field test, in both instances, positively ID'd the glaze as meth. Upon further review though, it turned out the field test was inaccurate.

The florida incident occurred in December of 2015 but came to light last week after the individual who was originally charged hired a lawyer to seek damages from the city.

The end of July 2016 will forever serve as a black hole in the long and prosperous history of dessert.
