After the surprise announcement yesterday (8/24) that Gov. Dalrymple would not seek re-election 2016, there have been many names thrown around as possible candidates for both the Republican and Democratic parties. Even with so many potential candidates, nobody has yet to declare that they will seek the seat.

Among the candidates that are most top of mind, Lt. Gov. Drew Wrigley and Sen. Heidi Heitkamp are the perceived front runners for the nominations. Neither have made a declaration of their intent, but have released statements that lead us to believe they will put their hats in the ring once the primary season starts. Sen. Heitkamp has even gone as far as saying her decision will come "sooner rather than later."

Other possible candidates for the position include current State Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem, North Dakota business leader Doug Burgum, Senate Minority Leader Mac Schneider, and US Attorney Tim Purdon.

One thing is for certain, 2016 is looking to be a competitive year in the political arena in North Dakota.
