Patients in North Dakota that need the use of medical marijuana may have to wait until next year.

According to KFYR, Division of Medical Marijuana director Jason Wahl says delays have come from the long duration of time it has taken to gain approval for construction of the buildings to be used for medical marijuana manufacturing. The buildings will be located in Bismarck and Fargo. The approval for construction must come from each city.

Despite the delays, the new timeline from Wahl projects that both locations for medical marijuana in Bismarck and Fargo to open up by the end of 2018. Other locations such as dispensaries in Grand Forks and Williston will likely open in March 2019. In January 2019, Jamestown, Devils Lake, Minot, and Dickinson will begin accepting dispensary applications to add more medical marijuana facilities.

Medical marijuana in North Dakota first gained voters' approval in November 2016. Since then, legislators and state officials have been working on the development for North Dakota's program for distributing medical marijuana.

While that program continues to be put in place, a petition for recreational marijuana use will be reviewed for the ballot this coming November.
