Senate Bill 2180 would allow for the state to refuse any money from the federal government in order to comply with any federal educational requirements.

The bill, whose prime sponsor is Senator Oley Larsen, argues that a child's education is up to the parents and should not be decided by the federal, state, or local government.

The idea behind the bill is that if the federal government requires some sort of educational mandate, and then provides money to the state to allow the schools to implement it, the state would have to refuse the money being offered. By not accepting the funding, the schools would then be unable to implement the federal mandate.

The full text of the bill, which is only 150 words long, can be read here.

Before the summer of 2016, North Dakota opted to replace the very controversial Common Core standards.
