The category may sound vague, but according to Forbes, North Dakota ranks as the 8th best state in the U.S. for business.

The key to this ranking starts with the tremendous energy industry, which showed a 3.8 percent job growth, while the income growth jumped 4.5 percent. There was also an increase in state product growth at 7.5 percent, and it definitely didn't hurt that North Dakota has the best unemployment rate in the country at 3 percent. All this has been done over the past five years.

Forbes uses six determining factors in ranking their annual list for 'Best States for Business.' Those factors are costs, labor supply, regulatory environment, current economic climate, growth prospects and quality of life.
