Wentz Throws 3 TDs in Tough Road Win Over Carolina
Carson Wentz led the Eagles to another win, this time at the hands of a tough Carolina Panthers team by the score of 28-23.
Wentz threw 3 touchdowns on 16 of 30 passing for 222 yards. While the stats may not look so impressive, not only was Wentz going against a tough Panthers defense on the road, but he made the timely throws in the red zone when he needed them most.
The Philadelphia Eagles defense also came up big. They were stifling at times. Panthers quarterback Cam Newton had troubles figuring it out for most of the game, going 28 of 52 for 239 yards, a touchdown, and 3 interceptions. He also had a rushing touchdown. The amount of pass attempts were more than he’s attempted previously in a regular season game.
The first quarter saw the teams trade field goals to make it 3-3. In the second quarter, the teams traded punts before Carolina got into the end zone on Cam Newton’s 16-yard touchdown score to make it 10-3.
After a punt, a tipped Newton pass was intercepted and gave the Eagles great field position at the Carolina 12-yard line. Four plays later, the Eagles converted a 4th and 1 making it first and goal. The Eagles would score on 3rd and goal when Wentz hit Zach Ertz for the touchdown to tie the score at 10-10 as teams entered the half.
In the third quarter, Patrick Robinson picked Cam Newton on the first Panthers possession to give the Eagles the ball at the Panthers 17. Wentz hit Ertz once again on a 17-yard score to give the Eagles 16-10 lead. The Eagles opted to go for the 2-point conversion and got it when LeGarrette Blount ran in to make it an 18-10 game.
Both teams exchanged field goals making it a 21-13 score. Then just before the fourth quarter, Wentz hit Alshon Jeffery on a 37-yard pass to the Panthers 24 to set up a 24-yard score from Wentz to Nelson Agholor to make it 28-16 just as they started the fourth quarter.
The Panthers would respond with a touchdown drive of their own with a 13 play, 75-yard drive, finished off by a 1-yard pass from Newton to Christian McCaffery to make it 28-23 with just over 6 minutes remaining.
The Eagles defense would hold from there. Helped out by an interception by Jalen Mills with just over three minutes remaining and a fourth down stop with just over a minute and half remaining, the Eagles would hold on.
The Eagles will get a pretty good rest before they take on the Washington Redskins at home on Monday Night Football on October 23rd.
