Williston has opened a $70 million rec center known as the Area Recreation Center (ARC) with hopes of promoting a healthy lifestyle while providing a place for families to spend time together.

It is believed that the ARC is the largest city owned recreation center in the United States according to executive director of Williston Parks and Recreation District, Darin Krueger.

The impressive complex includes:

  • Basketball & Tennis Courts
  • 200-Meter Indoor Running Track
  • Golf Simulator
  • 13,000 Square Feet of Indoor Turf and Fitness Area
  • Pool and Splash Park with Slide and Lazy River
  • Indoor Surfing known as FlowRider

In the first 10 days the ARC was open they saw approximately 2,000 guests every day and had 4,200 sign up for a membership.

With oil dominating much of the western part of the state, including Williston, the ARC is a way to draw more families to the area. The ARC's lead architect, Jim Galloway, stresses the importance of having more than just metal buildings which are common during oil booms.
