For every review praising the fun and artistry of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there are three more thinkpieces bemoaning the fact that we still haven’t gotten our Black Widow movie. And for good reason: She’s a character with a fascinating history whose arcs in the comics are always dynamic and interesting and grounded in current events, plus she’s the only one on the core team who hasn’t had her own movie yet. Every time the prospect is brought up, the folks at Marvel are usually neutral-to-positive about the idea — even her costar Chris Evans thinks she should get her own.

When Elle asked Evans about the idea of a Widow solo joint, he was as into the idea as he could be without singlehandedly green-lighting it on the spot:

That’s a good question. It would really just clean up, wouldn’t it? Scarlett [Johansson] is so good at everything she does. She’s played such a crucial part in the other films. She always makes her presence so felt — even when there are 50 different superheroes running around onscreen. I wouldn’t be surprised if that happens at some point in the future. I’m sure Scarlett would be open to it.

Evans is not the first person to say something to this effect, and until a Black Widow movie happens, he probably won’t be the last. The fans want it, Civil War directors Joe and Anthony Russo have voiced their support, Scarlett Johansson wants it, even Joss Whedon said he’d come back to Marvel to direct it. (And, hey, it would keep Johansson from having another Ghost in the Shell SNAFU.)

As Johansson is currently the highest-grossing actress in Hollywood, she’d probably command a higher wage than Marvel is accustomed to paying her, but with the fans’ support and the right director, there’s a wealth of material in the Widow universe for Marvel to make a hit. And, man, it’s about time we saw more genuinely good female-led superhero movies. Thank goodness for Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman.
