Hot off the success of Atlanta Season 2 and Childish Gambino’s “This Is America,” FX is locking down director Hiro Murai. The frequent Donald Glover collaborator will soon expand to his own FX series, aiming to develop new TV projects for FX Networks and beyond.

FX confirmed as much late Thursday, highlighting that Murai’s direction earned Glover/Gambino over 67 million views since “This Is America” was released during the actor’s SNL performance this past weekend. Murai also directed seven of the eleven Atlanta Season 2 episodes, including the standout “Teddy Perkins” with Glover in disguise as the creepy title character. Murai’s first-look producing deal with FX Productions will enable him to “develop new television projects for FX Networks and other outlets.” Said FX:

Hiro has excelled as a director and a creative force in commercials, music videos and episodic television, and we welcome the chance to see him develop his own series through FX Productions. He helped make Atlanta the most acclaimed comedy series on television, greatly contributing to its signature style and tone and becoming an integral part of the creative team led by Donald Glover. With his boundless artistry, Hiro is poised to take the next step as a television creator.

For his part, the Tokyo-born Murai also directed the (discarded) pilot for Amazon’s Sea Oak, along with FX episodes of Snowfall and Legion. He’s also directed videos for Chance The Rapper, A Tribe Called Quest, Spoon, The Shins, St. Vincent, Queens Of The Stone Age, Chet Faker and more, along with commercials for Nike, Corona, Lincoln, Microsoft, Google, Sonos and Gilette.

Glover’s rising tide raises all boats, but what should we expect from Murai’s FX expansion? Check out the Atlanta finale – which Murai also directed – trailer below.
