Head-to-toe camo might help you blend into the badlands, but on a date? Not so much.

When it comes to men’s fashion, North Dakota just can’t seem to find its footing—or at least not in anything other than sturdy boots. A recent survey by DatingAdvice.com polled 3,000 women to crown America’s best (and worst) dressed men, and the results were as frosty as a January morning in Williston.

While New Jersey’s "Urban Edge" style sashayed to the top spot with its polished streetwear and leather-jacket cool, North Dakota’s "Prairie Durable" aesthetic came dead last. Why? Let’s just say that dressing like you’re ready to repair a combine in subzero temps isn’t exactly screaming romance.

“I Can’t See Him… Oh Wait, It’s Camo Again”

North Dakota’s reliance on functional fashion—think heavy-duty jackets, rugged boots, and, of course, camo—isn’t winning hearts. According to the survey, a whopping 32% of women called head-to-toe camouflage a dealbreaker on a first date. One participant quipped, “I’m trying to get to know him, not play a game of Where’s Waldo in the woods.”

And while camo might help fend off the chill—or an angry pheasant—it doesn’t exactly exude "date night effort." Instead, it gives off vibes of “I just came from the deer stand, and I’ll probably talk about venison for the next hour.”

What Women Want (Hint: It’s Not Prairie Practicality)

The survey highlights what women find attractive in men’s fashion:

  • Urban Chic: Fitted jeans, designer sneakers, and leather jackets as seen in New Jersey.
  • Cowboy Cool: Oklahoma’s "Cowboy Classic" look with hats, jeans, and button-downs (bonus points if he owns a horse).
  • Classic Americana: Pennsylvania’s preppy yet practical mix of polos, sneakers, and sportswear.

Meanwhile, North Dakota’s unshakable loyalty to thick Carhartts and unironically wearing socks with sandals left the state floundering in the style rankings.

What Not to Wear (North Dakota Edition)

Women across the country also weighed in on their least favorite men’s fashion faux pas, with North Dakota unwittingly ticking several boxes:

  • Socks with sandals (35%): A North Dakota summer classic.
  • Oversized sports jerseys (14%): Fine for watching the Bison, not for a first date.
  • Camo overload (32%): Let’s save it for the hunting trip, shall we?

Even flip-flops and cowboy boots were deemed dealbreakers when overdone, proving that finding balance in footwear is harder than it looks.

Amber Brooks Weighs In

“Men’s fashion is tricky,” says Amber Brooks, senior editor at DatingAdvice.com. “What you think looks cool or practical might just send the wrong message. For example, wearing camo might say ‘I’m outdoorsy,’ but it can also say ‘I forgot we were meeting at a restaurant.’”

Can North Dakota Bounce Back?

North Dakota men, the verdict is in: Try swapping the camo for a classic plaid shirt paired with well-fitted jeans and boots that don’t look like they’ve waded through mud (even if they have). And let’s leave the camouflage on the actual battlefield. Or at least in the closet until hunting season.
