You might not think home-burglaries are very popular in North Dakota, but it’s never a bad idea to be prepared.

According to GitNux.org in 2020 the burglary rate in North Dakota was 218.7 incidents per 100,000 residents. That's enough for me to want to better protect myself.

Bad Hiding Spots

It’s always a good idea to hide your valuables, but the hiding places you’ve chosen might not be as good as you think they are. There are several places of burglar will check first when they invade your home.

Reader's Digest did an analysis with experts in the field of home burglary and invasion and found ten spots burglars are most likely to check when invading your home.

#1. Suitcases

The source says “Suitcases are common things people use as a safe even though it’s not a safe.”

You might think that’s clever, but the criminals will think of that one.

#2. Vases

You might think this is a good spot to hide a key or some other small object, but this is one of those spots burglars may look in.

#3. Freezers

This is new to me; I’ve never heard of people hiding things in a freezer, but apparently it’s a thing.

In any case, you might want to reconsider.

#4. Office Drawers.

This one’s kind of obvious it might not be the best choice to hide things. It’s one of the first places a burglar will look even if there’s a lock on it.

#5. Liquor Cabinets

According to the source, a liquor cabinet is not the best place to hide things, as a matter of fact, if I were a burglar, I probably be stealing your liquor as well.

#6. Medicine Cabinets

This one also seems sort of obvious, but the source says this is something a burglar will look at almost immediately. If someone is willing to break into your home, they’re probably going to be looking for drugs as well, and what better place to look.

#7. Unattached Safes

Safes are a great place to keep your valuables, but unfortunately, it only piques the interest of a burglar; they assume something valuable is hidden in there, and they might just take the whole safe with them.

#8. Dresser Drawers

According to the source dresser drawers are one of the first places a burglar will look; you will need to get more creative than that.

#9. Closets

The source says closets throughout the house, but especially the ones in the main bedroom are places burglars will look.

Also, if you’re hiding in one of those closets, I would consider a different hiding spot for yourself as well.

#10. Under The Mattress

This might be the most obvious place to hide something, while you might want to keep a knife under your bed, don’t put any valuables there. That’s where the burglar will look.

That's It!
