Mornings are getting darker, leaves are falling, and the air is getting a little cooler. As we get into fall and get closer to winter, there's something you should keep in mind, and it's for your safety.

Unfortunately, homes catch fire all the time. It happens for all kinds of different reasons, some you can prevent, and some you can't.

Warning To North Dakotans

Firefighters are often warning people to unplug certain appliances, and be cautious any time you're using something electrical.

They also say there's one specific item we shouldn't be plugging into a power strip, as it often leads to fires.

Don't Do It

Many North Dakotans use these during the cold weather months, and that's fine, but whatever you do, don't plug it into a power strip.

Space heaters.

Uh-oh...I have to admit, I'm using a space heater right now. Don't judge.

Space heaters draw a lot of power and often overload the circuit in these strips. Fire safety experts advise people to plug these directly into the wall outlet, and of course, never leave them unattended.

Also, certain brands of space heaters allow you to control the wattage the heater is using. I bought one like that and keep it on the low watt option, so I don't pop a breaker or burn anything down.

Other Items

This might sound like common sense to you, but many people lose their homes every year to mistakes like this.

Of course, there are other items you shouldn't be plugging into a power strip like, kitchen appliances, aquariums, laser printers, medical equipment, electric grills/cookers, and other power strips.

You can check out a more detailed list at Homemaking.com.

Be Safe

As it gets colder and colder throughout North Dakota, and we feel the need to bust out our space heaters, just remember to plug it into a wall and be cautious.
