The Deadliest 10-Mile Stretch Of Highway In North Dakota
Just about every driver will experience some sort of an accident in their lifetime.
You can be the safest and best driver there is and still be blindsided by some reckless driver without warning. According to a study, the average United States driver will experience one accident every 17 plus years and 3 to 4 over their lifetime.
Unfortunately, those accidents in some cases can prove to be fatal.
In North Dakota, we deal with a lot of difficult driving conditions. Extreme winter weather, icy roads, impaired drivers, and distracted drivers all contribute to dangerous driving conditions that are sometimes out of our control. Again, you can be the best driver in the world, and fate can take an unexpected turn.
Every state has dangerous stretches of highway and North Dakota is no different.
Weather can really play into that and certain highways are just prone to more difficult driving conditions. For example, east-to-west highways tend to ice up more frequently in the wintertime because of our prevailing northwest winds.
Other factors in the wintertime that contribute to dangerous roads in North Dakota include:
Bridges and overpasses are elevated roadways that are exposed to the winter elements on both sides, so they are more prone to freezing temperatures and accumulate snow and ice more quickly.
Rural highways are numerous with our wide open spaces in North Dakota. They are often traveled on too fast in the wintertime, and icing spots can be intermittent and widely spaced.
According to World Population Review, this is the deadliest 10-mile stretch of highway in North Dakota.
The highway is none other than I-94 which runs right through Bismarck Mandan. However, the deadliest stretch is between mile marker 331 (Casselton exit), and goes to mile marker 343 (just outside of West Fargo).
This is data from the year 2000 to 2019. Overall the most dangerous highway is U.S. Highway 2.
Again, the most dangerous stretch and overall most dangerous highways in North Dakota are both east-west highways.
