Let's be real, happiness is a subjective term. What I consider to be happy, you may consider the same to be miserable. Because of such, Wallet Hub used a criteria list to rank the happiest states in the country.  Wallet Hub scored various factors to produce the 2017 list including community environment, emotional and physical well-being and work environments. You can view the complete methodology here.

  1. Minnesota
  2. Utah
  3. Hawaii
  4. California
  5. Nebraska

The lowest ranking states for happiness are Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama, Oklahoma and West Virginia.

The Peace Garden State ranked # 19 and received high marks for steady employment and the most hours worked in a week. Other findings included-

  • 23rd – % of Depressed Adults
  • 17th – Adequate-Sleep Rate
  • 1st – Long-Term Unemployment Rate
  • 6th – Volunteer Rate
  • 2nd – Separation & Divorce Rate
  • 1st – Income Growth

It's our secret, how happy we are. It keeps the non-desirables out!
