Storm Upgraded to Winter Storm Warning For Much Of North Dakota

The National Weather Service in Bismarck has upgraded our Winter Storm Watch to a Winter Storm Warning for much of North Dakota, including Bismarck Mandan and our entire listening area (all of south-central and southwest North Dakota)

This warning will go into effect at 6 pm (today) Monday, December 12th, and continue through 6 am on Thursday, December 15th.

This storm has the potential to bring us up to a foot of snow with locally higher amounts possible.

To add insult to injury we are currently in a Winter Weather Advisory until 6 pm (tonight) Monday, December 12th.  Freezing drizzle will be likely with a light glaze to two-tenths of an inch of ice possible.  This will certainly impact the roads.

Winds are expected to increase on Tuesday into Tuesday night with wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour possible.

Travel could be very difficult to impossible.  Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.  If you have travel plans tonight through Thursday, consider altering or canceling your plans.  If travel is absolutely necessary, be sure to carry a winter survival kit in your vehicle.  The latest road conditions can be obtained by calling 511.

Snow is expected to linger into Friday morning.  Strong northwest winds are expected to create patchy blowing snow on both Thursday and Friday.

When this system finally exits late in the week look for bitterly cold temperatures to follow.  High temps will be in the lower teens on Saturday to single digits on Sunday.  Overnight lows in the single digits to below zero on Sunday morning.
