What Would It Look Like If an Atomic Bomb Hit Bismarck-Mandan?

Thursday, August 6th, marks the 70th anniversary of the United States dropping an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, killing over 60,000 people. So, what would it look like if that bomb was dropped on Bismarck-Mandan?

A nuclear historian named Alex Wellerstein created NukeMap, a website that allows you to pick any city in the world and see what would happen if an atomic bomb was dropped on it.

Below is what would happen to Bismarck if 'Little Boy,' the bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima, was dropped on Bismarck:

And, because we don't want them to feel left out, here's what it would look like if 'Little Boy' were dropped on Mandan:

The inner yellow circle is the fireball radius. Anyone inside this circle and the red circle around it, the air blast radius (20 psi), are most certainly dead. The green circle is the radiation radius. Without medical treatment, according to Nuclearsecrecy.com, the mortality rate of those inside the radiation radius is 50-90%. The grey circle is the air
blast radius (5 psi), which would level most buildings and lead to more deaths. The final, outer orange circle is the thermal radiation radius. Those in this area will receive third degree burns throughout the skin.

NukeMap not only allows you to see the effects of the Hiroshima bomb on any given city, but also the effects of countless other atomic bombs created over the years, including the bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan and the first ever H-bomb.
