‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Is Making Post-‘Infinity War’ Plans
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. largely dropped its Avengers-adjacent premise, but – with news of Coulson rejoining the MCU – it’s worth considering future plans. New reports suggest showrunners are considering a sixth season that follows up on Avengers: Infinity War, exploring a new corner of the Marvel universe.
Keep in mind that showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen have previously spoken to Season 5’s finale as a potential endpoint for the series, albeit one that would naturally accommodate a sixth season renewal from ABC. Should Coulson and co. make the cutoff for a sixth year, however, Whedon and Tancharoen acknowledged at WonderCon that a post-Infinity War season would follow previous examples of The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy and Doctor Strange unlocking different genres to play with (h/t IGN):
When Doctor Strange came out it introduced us to magic which gave us Ghost Rider. When [Guardians of the Galaxy] came out, we were introduced to space. We are waiting for [Avengers: Infinity War] to come out so it can open a new playground for us.
That said, the fifth season has already trafficked in outer space, time-travel and planetary destruction, so the mysteries around Infinity War and its sequel leave it difficult to surmise what direction Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 6 might take. It’s also worth noting that Clark Gregg will reprise his role as Agent Coulson for the 90s-set Captain Marvel movie in 2019 – his first cinematic appearance since 2012’s Avengers – which might serve either as a post-S.H.I.E.L.D. swan song or validate his MCU return. Lest we forget, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 1 established that Nick Fury used a Kree corpse to resurrect Agent Coulson, which Captain Marvel may retroactively explain.
We’ll soon find out whether Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. lives on past its fifth season, but what Infinity War territory might a sixth season explore?
