Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) was hospitalized late Tuesday and underwent treatment for an artery blockage.

The New York Times reported Wednesday that the presidential contender checked into a hospital with "chest discomfort" and cancelled all campaign appearances for the foreseeable future.

A spokesman for the senator said had two stents inserted at the hospital and was resting comfortably. A number of the senator's rivals in the Democratic race offered their well-wishes.

Senator Sanders was in Las Vegas to attend a gun forum, marking the anniversary of a mass shooting in the city two years ago.

The senator's advanced age has always been an issue, but supporters have played down this development. One associate noted that “there are numerous presidents who have had heart problems and heart problems far worse."

AT 78, Mr. Sanders is the oldest serious candidate in the running. It remains to be seen how his health issues will affect his campaign. The next Democratic debate is October 15.
