Monday, a bill was proposed that would raise the minimum wage in North Dakota from $7.25 to $9.25 an hour.

The bill was introduced in hopes of increasing earnings of low-income residents in the state. The bill is predicted to not go very far, but Rep. Marvin Nelson, D-Rolla, is proposing the bill that would go in effect by the beginning of 2018.

It has also been proposed by the legislation that the Labor Commissioner adjusts the wage to account for cost of living increases. This would take effect January 1, 2019 and every year after.

The current minimum wage has been at $7.25 per hour since July 2009. The bill to raise the minimum wage has been referred to the House Industry Business and Labor Committee, but a hearing has yet to be scheduled.
