It's well known that North Dakota has some pretty late sunsets as the calendar gets ever-so-closer to the summer solstice. But did you know what city in our state has the latest?

Due to its northwestern location within the Central Time Zone, not to mention, the furthest western North Dakota city in the time zone, it turns out that Fortuna, ND has the latest sunset for several days after the summer solstice, within the 48 contiguous states.

The city is only six miles south of the Canadian border, and despite the fact that communities rest within that distance that are further north, Fortuna's western location is what gives it the latest sunset when the summer solstice hits. Last year, on the day of the summer solstice (June 24), the sunset at 10:03 p.m. in Fortuna.

According to the 2010 census, all of about 22 people living there get to experience some pretty late daylight hours for at least part of the year.
