How Many Of The 37,000 Afghan Evacuees Are Coming To ND?
North Dakota's scheduled to receive evacuees- four states including South Dakota will not receive any.
The Associated Press is reporting that this is only the first wave of Afghans entering the country. On Wednesday, the Biden administration notified governors in 46 states that the first group of 37,000 evacuees were being scheduled for resettlement. Here's the numbers provided by the AP...
The administration has requested funding from Congress to help resettle 65,000 Afghans in the United States by the end of this month and 95,000 by September 2022.
South Dakota, Hawaii, Wyoming, West Virginia and the District of Columbia are not scheduled at this time to resettle anyone in this first group who fled during the last days of the U.S. withdrawal. North Dakota is on the low end of the evacuee list with just 49 new arrivals scheduled at this point.
Where are the majority of "refugees" going?
Well, it appears California and Texas will bear the biggest influx of Afghans with 5,255 people coming to the Golden State and 4,481 landing in the Lone Star State. It seems most of the evacuees are choosing locations where friends and families have settled in the past. The evacuees do not currently have "refugee" status. The Daily Mirror reports that this means they are not eligible for food stamps or other cash assistance programs, Medicaid and more. President Biden is calling on Congress to grant access to these programs for evacuees as well.
Each evacuee will get $1,225 to help with rent, food, furnishings etc.
Well, that's not going to get you very far anywhere...but especially not in California. These folks fleeing chaos should be seeking areas with cheaper housing and plentiful job openings. Places like North Dakota.
