School is just a couple of weeks away, and summer is defiantly waning.

The calendar says August, and we still have plenty of 80-degree weather remaining but you know how time flies.  It won't be long before people's thoughts will turn to pumpkin spice and football, and we all know what comes after that.  WINTER.

The Farmer's Almanac has been predicting their long-range winter forecast since all the way back in 1818.

Their extended weather forecasts are based on mathematical and astronomical formulas.  Any idea what that means?  I know I don't.

According to the Farmer's Almanac, last year's warm winter anomaly will shift back to more of a typically cool and snowy winter for a good share of the country this coming winter (That was not the case in North Dakota last year, I would say temps were about average with lots and I mean lots of snow.  After all we had over a 100 inches of the white stuff in Bismarck.)

I know what you're thinking.  We are supposedly going into an El Nino weather pattern this winter, which typically brings us a warm and average snowfall season in North Dakota (average yearly snowfall in Bismarck is about 46 inches).

However, the Farmer's Almanac's mathematical and astronomical formulas beg to differ.

North Dakota should see about average snowfall but it will be COLDER than average going against a typical El Nino weather pattern for our area.

The Farmer's Almanac also pinpointed a potential blizzard for us during the first week in March, which will remind us winter is not over yet.  Overall the winter forecast for North Dakota is for cold temps and occasional bouts of widespread storminess.

The brrr is back baby.
