ND Rancher Sells Bull For Record $1.51 Million

A St. Anthony rancher has set a new record for highest selling bull. Last weekend Kelly Schaff, a third generation rancher, held his family's Schaff Angus Valley's 116th consecutive production sale, making it the longest production sale currently in the world.

The Angus bull, SAV America 8018, sold for $1.51 million to Herbster Angus Farms, located in Falls City, Nebraska. The sale nearly doubled the previous record of $800,000, held by SAV Elation 7899, another from Schaff's stock.

Auctioneer Joe Goggins was running the sale and he told Inforum he had to take a moment once the price reached $1.3 million dollars, stating he was dealing with "figures I’m not really used to.”

It's actually the third year in a row Schaff Angus Vally has set the new record, starting in 2017 when SAV America's sire (father), SAV President 6847, sold for $750,000. However impressive SAV America's father might be, his mother might be even more impressive. SAV Madame Pride 0075 has been a top breeding cow for the rancher for 18 years. Her embryos have led to 154 offspring that have been sold to ranches in 21 states, Canada and Brazil, and this year topped $5.3 million in total sales.

With such impressive lineage, it's no wonder SAV America was bound for great things. When Schaff started to wean the bull at 205 day's old, he already weighed a whopping 1,107 pounds.

The business has been a labor of love for the Schaff family. Kelly Schaff told Inforum his great-grandfather homesteaded the ranch and his grandfather registered the Angus herd, starting the business. Schaff's children will become the fourth generation of his family to run the business.
