A group in North Dakota has been approved to circulate petitions that seek to raise the minimum wage rate in the state to $15 an hour.

According to U.S. News & World Report, the format of the petition was approved Wednesday (March 13th) by Secretary of State Al Jaeger. In order for a proposed measure to find its way on the November ballot, a total of at least 13,452 signatures is needed before July 9th.

The chairman of the petition's sponsoring committee is Scott Nodland of Bismarck. Nodland says that people are living at poverty level if they are being paid North Dakota's current minimum wage rate of $7.25 per hour, which is the federal standard.

Should enough signatures be acquired on the petition for the proposed measure to end up on the November ballot and the measure passes, the minimum wage rate would increase to $9.83 per hour in 2019 before being raised to $15 per hour in 2021.
