So what's the best war movie of all time? According to one recent online article it's Steven Spielberg's epic Saving Private Ryan.

Ryan was voted the ‘The Best War Movies Ever’ by the Ranker community, beating out such formidable competition as Oliver Stone's Platoon, Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket and Apocalypse Now.

Set against the backdrop of the D-Day invasion, Saving Private Ryan is the story of a group of soldiers sent into Nazi-occupied France to find one private, the last surviving brother of his family.

Released in 1998, the Tom Hanks vehicle kick-started a wave of excellent war flicks, largely about World War II and the more recent military actions in the Middle East, notably Dunkirk, Black Hawk Down, The Hurt Locker and American Sniper, among others.

While some critics dismiss Ryan as a pro-war "flag-waver," a number of scenes, particularly at the film's beginning, hit hard with graphic depictions of the conflict.
