Services are set for Wednesday and Thursday for the mother of North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp.

The Washington Post reports Doreen Heitkamp died Sunday at 88. The senator's family says Mrs. Heitkamp had struggled for some time with Parkinson's Disease.

The senator described her mother as "the rock of our family," in a statement.

Mrs. Heitkamp's son Joel, host of radio's News and Views (heard daily on SuperTalk 1270) honored his late mother on his blog:

"She taught us to never fear being in the minority if we believed we were right. I loved that about my mother.

"Doreen LaVonne Berg Heitkamp was a woman before her time." 

Mr. Heitkamp hailed his mother as a progressive-minded individual who expected her daughters to excel.

The family says she will be laid to rest in her hometown of Mantador.

Visitation will take place Wednesday with the funeral scheduled for Thursday morning.
