Burlington volunteer firefighters are so busy this year that their work "is not really volunteer anymore," says department spokesman Karter Lesmann.

As a result, while the department was able to hold its pancake breakfast fundraiser, also an annual event, over the weekend of the 11th and 12th, they will not be able to host the Halloween haunted house event that has been a tradition for the past five years.

Firefighters explain that, because of "oil-related activity such as traffic crashes and hazardous material incidents, along with the training necessary to respond to those calls," they are just too tied up to make the haunted house happen this year.

In past years, the event has raised about $10,000 on average.
