It's a new month, the end of the week, and time to feature a new local hero. This week, we had our first female entry for First Responder RecognitionThis hero works with the littlest members of our society - newborn babies. Bismarck-Mandan, let's celebrate local hero and nurse, Gretchen.

Gretchen is a nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Sanford in Bismarck. Summer, the person who nominated Gretchen knows the value of someone who works with the most vulnerable people in our community. In 2016, Summer's son was born premature and was in critical condition. Summer wrote, "Gretchen was the most caring and loving nurse in the NICU."

Now that Coronavirus has pretty much taken over our lives, Summer knows that Gretchen is there for the premature and sickly babies when they need the most care. Gretchen "defines what a nurse should be and does an excellent job at explaining and coaching parents of these little miracles. I hope she knows how much she is appreciated," Summer wrote.

Thank you to Gretchen for being there to comfort babies and new parents, especially now when our world is a scary place.

Do you know a first responder or other hero in our Bismarck-Mandan community? You can nominate him or her to featured for First Responder Recognition. Every Friday, we feature a different local hero on our stations and blogs. Every month, one of our nominees will pick up restaurant gift cards from Bismarck Heating & Air, Peacock Alley, and 40 Steak & Seafood. Get all the details here.
