Other than English, Spanish is the second most common language spoken in the United States. However, North Dakota stands out as one of the seven states with a different language as their second most commonly used.

Residents with German descent make up 44% of North Dakota's population, followed by Norwegian descent at 30%. With that information, it makes sense that German is the language most used behind English.

The six other states with a language more commonly spoken than Spanish are:

  • Louisiana - French
  • Maine - French
  • Vermont - French
  • New Hampshire - French
  • Hawaii - Tagalog
  • Alaska- Yupik

Like any other state, North Dakota is made up of a wide variety of people. The most popular languages spoken from other descents include:

  • Hidatsa
  • Norwegian
  • Nepali
  • Kru, Ibo, Yoruba
