Movie theaters appear to be moving in the direction of Blockbuster Videos.

Bismarck lost its AMC movie theater back in May of 2020.  COVID-19 was given the blame for the theater closing its curtains for good.  While it's safe to say that the pandemic certainly played a part in the decline of people heading to the theaters in the Capital City, it's certainly not the only reason.

Another big reason is that movie theaters have priced their patrons out of the building.

With movie tickets running north of $10 dollars at just about every theater these days, taking the family out for a Saturday evening movie is a pricey adventure.  We won't even get into the price of popcorn, soda, and candy.  A family of four is easily looking at $60 to $75 dollars to watch a movie.

You might as well stream a movie at home with the family and save some money.  I know that's what a lot of people are thinking and doing these days.

Me?  I still love the whole experience of going to the movies.  It's something I used to do with my son just about weekly as he was growing up.  Although, it's something I'm doing a whole lot less these days.  Mostly for the reasons above.  I just can't justify it.  The last movie I saw in the theater was Top Gun 2, and that movie was worth the price of admission.  Few are these days.

North Dakota is about to lose another AMC, and this time it's in my hometown of Grand Forks.

Even after a remodel, price reductions, and being on the south end of town where the city is growing, it still wasn't enough to save the AMC.  The last day you can buy tickets to the theater is Thursday, June 29th.
