Potential Winter Snow Event For North Dakota This Week?

We have a Colorado Low that has its sites on North Dakota late this week.

It's been a while since we've been talking about a snow event or snowstorm for that matter in North Dakota.  In fact, we have virtually no snow over anywhere in the state, and my grass is even beginning to turn green at my home south of Lincoln.  That's pretty incredible considering it's only February 6th.

Even though the Ground Hog on Friday predicted only 4 weeks left of winter, we might see some of that winter weather over a good portion of North Dakota late this week.

According to Valley News Live at Colorado Low will impact the state starting Wednesday.

Most of this will begin falling as rain over western North Dakota as it will begin moving across the state.  In Bismarck, we are likely to see a rain-snow mix on Thursday with it changing over to all snow by Thursday evening.  There will also be some snow associated with this system.  Here's a video showing that from Valley News Live.

So, the big question remains. How much snow are we likely to see in Bismarck?

At this time, it's too early to tell.  Colorado Lows certainly have the potential to pile up the white stuff.  However, according to the National Weather Service and a Hazardous Weather Outlook message that was issued on Tuesday morning, the brunt of the storm looks to favor western into north-central North Dakota.

Minor impacts, including low visibilities, and slippery roads with plowable snow accumulations.  There's a 50 to 70% chance of seeing 4 inches of snow or more in western and north-central North Dakota.

In Bismarck Mandan, it will take longer for the rain to switch over to snow.

It looks like we will see more in the neighborhood of up to a couple of inches of snow.  However, there's still some uncertainty with this storm system and the path could change.  We will be sure to keep you up to date.  If you have travel plans west or north on Thursday or Friday be weather alert.
