Townsquare Media Bismarck decided to challenge a 7th grade spelling bee champ from Minot who will compete in the preliminary rounds of the Scripps National Spelling Bee on Tuesday, May 31st.

Chloe Carlson is a 7th grader from Minot who is in Washington D.C. competing along with 284 spellers for a top prize of $40,000 cash, a $2,500 savings bond, over $400 worth of reference books and an appearance on Live with Kelly.

This is no easy feat. Competitors begin by taking a computer test where they need to know the spelling of words and even the meaning of words. Following that there is an oral version of the test. The oral part begins on Wednesday and can be watched via ESPN's stream only service.

A points based system decides if the speller goes on to compete in the finals. The finals are televised on ESPN 2 in the morning at 9am on Thursday and then continue on ESPN in primetime at 7pm.

We don't know if we'll get to see Chloe on stage but we decided to bring her to our studios in Mandan before she took the trip down to Washington D.C. to try and have our staff compete with her.
