Drones Literally Can’t Fly Everywhere- SCIENCE!

Major "props" to the University of North Dakota and Grand Forks for arriving early to the ground floor of the amazingly quick moving industry that is drones. North Dakota is so ahead of the game worldwide, that we need to hand out an official "atta boy!" to all the inventors, researchers, and innovators that have left North Dakota "looking down" on the rest of the competition. Here's a story I wrote up about the Grand Forks drone explosion just a few weeks back.

So, I'm talking to a friend of mine that works with drones in his field.  Recently, they were in South Dakota on a quickly organized shoot. So they went to a location shoot with a drone and could not fly it- because there was a helipad involved in the complex they were shooting.

Here's the part that's obvious to smart people, but new to me.  Modern drones have a GPS shutoff that's built in so they can not operate in unauthorized areas. Now, if given time they can request permission from SKYNET to operate in the area. For those not getting the reference- SKYNET is the world domination platform that brought us The Terminator movies.

So if you have an older drone, you can still probably fly wherever you like- but if you're a pro and need the new stuff, you will be GPS handicapped to be able to fly where ya like. This rather says it all

A lot of these are simply common sense. And that's something you need to use when flying. In addition to the FAA rules, remember that National Parks have banned the use of drones within their confines. It's a shame, because aerial footage of beautiful locations like Yellowstone and Yosemite is a compelling reason to own a drone, but on the other hand, some places should be free of technological distractions. The airspace around Washington DC is also restricted.

I was just at Yellowstone and the last thing I'd want to see is a bunch of drone douches running their machines over Old Faithful. So, if ya think you can get a new drone and fly it where ya please, you best look into restrictions.
