It's no secret that North Dakota enjoys adult beverages. It's probably more shocking how much Wisconsin enjoys theirs.

According to 24/7 Wall St., the top twenty drunkest cities in America have been compiled. Two of our very own North Dakota cities made the top ten. Fargo and Grand Forks earned a spot on the list at fifth and eighth, respectively.

The determining factors in the rankings were median household income, poverty rates, median age, bachelor’s degree attainment rates, and share of the population in college or graduate school. It's no surprise two big college towns in our state would make the list based on such determining factors. The number of bars per capita was also factored in. Given the fact that the North Dakota population is lacking in general, we were bound to have a city or two show up in such rankings.

In Grand Forks, 13 percent of the population is enrolled in college or graduate school, which is almost double the 7 percent national average. In Fargo, the metro population has the highest excessive drinking rate outside of metros in Wisconsin, which we'll explore in a second. But first, here were the listed factors for both Fargo and Grand Forks:

5. Fargo, ND
> Pct. adults drinking to excess: 25.2%
> Pct. driving deaths involving alcohol: 38.0%
> Est. number of bars: 74
> Median household income: $56,051

8. Grand Forks, ND-MN
> Pct. adults drinking to excess: 24.2%
> Pct. driving deaths involving alcohol: 34.0%
> Est. number of bars: 45
> Median household income: $53,443

The ten drunkest cities in the U.S. is as follows:

  1. Green Bay, WI
  2. Eau Claire, WI
  3. Appleton, WI
  4. Madison, WI
  5. Fargo, ND
  6. Oshkosh-Neenah, WI
  7. Missoula, MT
  8. Grand Forks, ND
  9. Wausau, WI
  10. La Crosse-Onalaska, WI

As you can tell, it seems that Wisconsin might have a little bit of a drinking problem. They might want to seek some counseling at some point.

You're probably either relieved or disappointed that Bismarck didn't make this list. In fact, Bismarck didn't even make the top twenty. However, we know that we have plenty of alcohol flowing throughout the area, so be sure to make a party happen this holiday weekend. Drink responsibly, Bismarck!
